Plastic Water Bottle Junkie


    I must confess that I am a plastic water bottle junkie!  I keep a case of bottles at home and at school at all times.  I carry plastic water bottles in my purse, car and on my person almost all the time.  This habit of mine has been bothering me on several levels.  The cost, the plastic trash and the health risks that I am hearing more and more about have made me pick this habit to change.
    It is time to face down this monster!  First, I needed to find a permanent water bottle.  After some research and just plain liking it, I ordered a stainless steel water bottle like this one from S'well.

      Next comes filtration.  I chose this Brita Stream System.
   Bottom Line:  I spend at least $5 a week in plastic water bottles=$260/year
    Swell Water Bottle $25
    Brita pitcher and one filter $29
    Filters approx every 2 month at $7 a filter=$42/year
Total cost for replacing plastic water bottles=$96
Savings:  $164/year

I am eager to see how this works for me.  I will need to hand wash the water bottle.  I will need to purchase and change the filters on the Brita system.  I can see possibly buying another water bottle to leave at school?  I could even see purchasing a Brita system for use at school?  Even if I added those purchases I would still save money.
The best:  not polluting the Earth with all that plastic and knowing that I am drinking water in a much healthier and safer way! (and there is that not having to schlep cases of water bottles from the store all the time😃)

Money I Should Have Spent

    I have written much about how to save money.  This is one about how I should have spent money!  I used a company for the last couple of years for fertilization of my lawn.  The lawn looked great. My house also came with a sprinkler system which I have had turned on in the spring and off in the fall since I have been here.      I decided in my summer of savings not to have the sprinkler system turned on.  We would water less and just use the old fashioned sprinkler when needed.  I also decided to not have a company fertilize, we would do it if needed.     Well, I now have dying weedy grass.  I have tried to be a gardener.  I am not a gardner!  I need to repeat that a few times.  I am NOT a gardner.  I am NOT a gardner.  I keep trying to be one and failing.  I do not enjoy gardening.     I do have a daughter who loves to garden.....when she feels like it and what she feel...

Check Out Aldi

    My mom has been shopping at Aldi for years now.  For some reason I got it in my head that Aldi carried cheap, poor quality, knock off brands of items.  One blogger wrote that she thought of Aldi as "the poor peoples' grocery store".   It wasn't until I took my mom shopping at her Aldi's that I finally got a good look at the products and prices.  I was impressed.  I also learned that Aldi owns Trader Joes!  So now that I have an open mind I have been shopping at Aldi.  Here is a recent trip to Aldi with cost compared to my usual grocery store (Kroger).
