Check Out Aldi

My mom has been shopping at Aldi for years now.  For some reason I got it in my head that Aldi carried cheap, poor quality, knock off brands of items.  One blogger wrote that she thought of Aldi as "the poor peoples' grocery store".   It wasn't until I took my mom shopping at her Aldi's that I finally got a good look at the products and prices.  I was impressed.  I also learned that Aldi owns Trader Joes!  So now that I have an open mind I have been shopping at Aldi.  Here is a recent trip to Aldi with cost compared to my usual grocery store (Kroger).

Half & Half 1 quart  Kroger:  $3.49   Aldi:  $1.79
2% milk half gallon  Kroger:  $1.89   Aldi:  $1.19
Sugar 4lbs  Kroger:  $1.89   Aldi:  $1.49
butter sticks 1lb:  Kroger:  $3.29  Aldi:  $2.45
Strawberries 16oz  Kroger:  $2.50  Aldi:  $1.19
Mandarin oranges 15oz  Kroger:  $1.00  Aldi:  $.79
Walnuts 8oz  Kroger:  $5.59  Aldi:  $3.49
organic lemonade 32oz  Kroger:  $2.49  Aldi:  $2.29

Total cost at Kroger:  $22.14
Total cost at Aldi:  $14.68
Money Saved on this trip:  $7.46

Shopping at Aldi definitely saves money.

Here are a few things to get used when shopping at Aldi's:

1.  You will never see stray carts in the parking lot at Aldi's because customers must put a quarter in a slot on the cart which then unlocks it from the rest of the carts.  When the cart is returned so is your quarter.  SMART!

2.  Aldi's has all items in the boxes on the shelves.

3.  You won't be able to get everything at Aldi's, their selection is much more limited than the grocery store.  You will be able to get all the basics however.

4.  Aldi's encourages customers to bring their own bags by charging 10 cents a bag.  I read that "Aldi was green before green was cool".

5.  Customers pack their own bags.  The cashier checks you out and puts everything in a waiting cart.  You pay and then take the cart to a long counter where you can pack your groceries at your own pace.  Check out is super fast this way.

Just a conservative guess but I think I could save $10-$15/week.
Total yearly savings:  $520-$780

  1. I try to only shop at daily deals and aldi.
Pay less than half of what I would at Meijers.
