Will's First Apartment , the Furniture Hunt

    Will is moving into his first apartment!  It is an unfurnished studio apartment in this big old house.  It is in a neighborhood of many of these old beauties filled with student apartments.  

    We went to some garage sales.  I realized after several sales that this was a slow way to find items.  We did find a cool industrial desk lamp.
    The price was $25, we payed $20.  We found it on eBay for over $200.  
   
     We found 4 nice glass "root"beer mugs.  Of course Will found a nice motorcycle helmet for $10.  Maybe the helmet could be wall decoration?
     At that point and two hours later Will came up with the idea of Fred's.  Fred's is an institution around here.  Anyone who has never been there should go at least once because there is nothing else quite like it.


    Picture Grandma's attic but Grandma has an entire building and Grandma was an extreme hoarder!  It is like a furniture scavenger hunt.  Things are piled high.  There are times when you can't even get to things because the path has disappeared.  The good, bad and ugly are all mixed up into one big mess.  

   Will and I had a good time scavenging.  Under several layers of furniture Will found a leather love seat in great condition.  The price started out at $175, way too much!  By the time we were leaving it was $125, better but not there yet.  It was clear that the price wasn't going to come down any further.  We asked if we could bring in some furniture to get the price down.  The answer was yes so Will, I and the blue pick up went home to pick up a couple of pieces from my basement which I was going to donate anyway.
   These babies got the price of the leather couch down to $90, SOLD!

    We got an office chair and two yard sticks for my growing collection as well.
Money Saved:  By bartering we got the price of the couch down from $175 to $125 and then by trade we got the price down to $90. That is an $85 dollar savings.  

I need to remember Fred's in the future.  It is worth seeing if he will buy pieces before I donate them.  I got $35 for the two pieces I brought in which we felt was worth our time!

    I read an interesting article this morning about ways people think they are saving money but in the long run they are not.  Like buying something on sale that you would not have bought otherwise.    In this my "summer of saving" it is tempting to look too deep, to micro-manage my spending.  This is going to require a balance which will be tricky.  On the one hand I want to be mindful of all my spending, but on the other I do not want to waste valuable time over saving a few pennies.    My guy said to me last night, "you are not going to become of one of those crazy coupon ladies are you?"      I do NOT want to turn into one of those crazy coupon ladies.  I do NOT want to make it my full time job to find ways to save money.  I do want a summer of looking at my spending however.  I want to apply what I learn to my year ahead!      I gotta run.  I am going to Jo-Ann Fabric to get suppli...

Money I Should Have Spent

    I have written much about how to save money.  This is one about how I should have spent money!  I used a company for the last couple of years for fertilization of my lawn.  The lawn looked great. My house also came with a sprinkler system which I have had turned on in the spring and off in the fall since I have been here.      I decided in my summer of savings not to have the sprinkler system turned on.  We would water less and just use the old fashioned sprinkler when needed.  I also decided to not have a company fertilize, we would do it if needed.     Well, I now have dying weedy grass.  I have tried to be a gardener.  I am not a gardner!  I need to repeat that a few times.  I am NOT a gardner.  I am NOT a gardner.  I keep trying to be one and failing.  I do not enjoy gardening.     I do have a daughter who loves to garden.....when she feels like it and what she feel...

Check Out Aldi

    My mom has been shopping at Aldi for years now.  For some reason I got it in my head that Aldi carried cheap, poor quality, knock off brands of items.  One blogger wrote that she thought of Aldi as "the poor peoples' grocery store".   It wasn't until I took my mom shopping at her Aldi's that I finally got a good look at the products and prices.  I was impressed.  I also learned that Aldi owns Trader Joes!  So now that I have an open mind I have been shopping at Aldi.  Here is a recent trip to Aldi with cost compared to my usual grocery store (Kroger).
